Urbanisasi dunia meningkat pesat. Lebih dari setengah dari populasi dunia
tinggal di kota-kota besar  dan kota-kota umumnya . Di Eropa angkanya
setinggi 70 persen.

Similarity Of Urban Flora: Plants In Towns And Cities Are More Closely Related Than Those In The Countryside

More plant species grow in German towns and cities than in the countryside, but those in towns and cities are more closely related and are often functionally similar. This makes urban ecosystems more susceptible to environmental impacts.
This is the finding of ecologists at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) who evaluated 14 million entries in the German national FLORKART database, which has been built up by several thousand volunteers over the past few years. They claim that because of the altered environmental conditions, nature conservation needs to look not only at conserving as many species as possible, but also at other aspects of species diversity.
Writing in the October issue of Ecology Letters, the researchers say that since urbanisation is already far advanced and will continue to advance in future, we need to develop strategies to protect species diversity even within towns and cities.
The urbanisation of the world is increasing rapidly. More than half of the world’s population lives in towns and cities. In Europe the figure is as high as 70 per cent. The fact that there is a higher number of species in towns and cities than in the surrounding countryside is due to a number of different reasons: many towns and cities developed in geologically and structurally diverse landscapes, so are naturally rich in species; the towns and cities themselves have very diverse structures, temperatures are higher than in the surrounding countryside, and alien species are often introduced into towns and cities.
However, although towns and cities harbour more species than the surrounding countryside, in terms of conserving biological diversity it is not just the number of species that matters, but also their relatedness (i.e. phylogenetic diversity). Every species is a carrier of inherited information that determines e.g. pollination method and leaf structure. The greater the phylogenetic diversity of a community, the greater the probability that it will contain species with different traits.
The traits and, consequently, the phylogenetic diversity, are therefore the tools that enable plant communities to respond to different environmental events. Without knowledge about traits and relatedness (phylogenetics) our understanding of how communities develop and how they deal with altered environmental conditions will remain incomplete.
For their study, the researchers laid a grid of cells, each around 12 kilometres wide, over Germany and characterised the cells in terms of land use. 59 cells were classified as urban landscape, 1365 as agricultural and 312 as forest or near-natural landscapes. “Our findings lead us to believe that different environmental filters operate in urban areas and in rural areas,” explains Sonja Knapp of the UFZ. The loss of phylogenetic information reduces a community’s ability to respond to environmental changes and could in the long term have a negative impact on the functions of urban ecosystems.

Drastic decline of the flora biodiversity at the cultivated fields of Catalonia

Summary:
The flora of cereal crops has declined dramatically in Catalonia (Spain) from the 50s to today according to a new study.
.........................
The flora of cereal crops has declined dramatically in Catalonia (Spain) from the 50s to today. It is estimated that agricultural intensification has led to a reduction of over 50% of the wealth and 70% in the abundance of so-called weeds (flora arvense) respectively. This decline has been particularly dramatic in the rarest species and those that are characteristic of the harvest (segetals species).
Agricultural practices more intense in the last five decades have also adversely affected the flora interesting for birds, pollinators and other invertebrates. Comparing data between conventional and organic crops shows that agricultural management that follows organic practices not only help the recovery of the biodiversity of the flora of crops, but also increases the rare species and those that are useful for wildlife.
However, it seems difficult to recover the highest levels of plant biodiversity in crops Catalonia observed before the intensification of agriculture.
This new study, publlished in Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment, has been coordinated by Dra. Lourdes Chamorro (Institute of Biodiversity Research and the Department of Plant Biology at the UB). The other authors are Ramon Maria Masalles and Francesc Xavier Sans (head of the Agricultural Systems Ecology at the University of Barcelona).

Remarkably diverse flora in Utah, USA, trains scientists for future missions on Mars
Date:
June 9, 2016
Source:

Summary:
Future manned missions to the Mars will rely heavily on training at sites here on Earth that serve as analogues to the red planet, such Utah's Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS), run by the Mars Society.
.......................
Future Martian explorers might not need to leave the Earth to prepare themselves for life on the Red Planet. The Mars Society have built an analogue research site in Utah, USA, which simulates the conditions on our neighbouring planet.
Practicing the methods needed to collect biological samples while wearing spacesuits, a team of Canadian scientists have studied the diverse local flora. Along with the lessons that one day will serve the first to conquer Mars, the researchers present an annotated checklist of the fungi, algae, cyanobacteria, lichens, and vascular plants from the station in their publication in the open-access journal Biodiversity Data Journal.
Located in the desert approximately 9 km outside of Hanksville, Utah, and about 10 km away from the Burpee Dinosaur Quarry, a recently described bone bed from the Jurassic Morrison Formation, the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) was constructed in 2002. Since then, it has been continuously visited by a wide range of researchers, including astrobiologists, soil scientists, journalists, engineers, and geologists.
Astrobiology, the study of the evolution and distribution of life throughout the universe, including the Earth, is a field increasingly represented at the MDRS. There, astrobiologists can take advantage of the extreme environment surrounding the station and seek life as if they were on Mars. To simulate the extraterrestrial conditions, the crew members even wear specially designed spacesuits so that they can practice standard field work activities with restricted vision and movement.
In their present research, the authors have identified and recorded 38 vascular plant species from 14 families, 13 lichen species from seven families, 6 algae taxa including both chlorophytes and cyanobacteria, and one fungal genus from the station and surrounding area. Living in such extreme environments, organisms such as fungi, lichens, algae, and cyanobacteria are of particular interest to astrobiologists as model systems in the search for life on Mars.
However, the authors note that there is still field work to be executed at the site, especially during the spring and the summer so that the complete local diversity of the area can be captured.
"While our present checklist is not an exhaustive inventory of the MDRS site," they explain, "it can serve as a first-line reference for identifying vascular plants and lichens at the MDRS, and serves as a starting point for future floristic and ecological work at the station."
